Moana 2: Record Breaking Global Box Office Takings

Expectations had been high for Disney’s ‘Moana 2’, but the film’s five-day opening set a new record for Thanksgiving weekend. (The previous best was $125m for Frozen 2 in its second week of release in 2019.) ‘Moana 2’ added $165.3m internationally. David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller's animated sequel has sailed to an eye-watering $386 million opening at the global box office making it the second-best global launch of the year.

With $221 million of the above figure coming from domestic ticket sales alone, ‘Moana 2’ has already over shadowed ‘Frozen II’ to  become Disney's highest ever animation opening at the box office, taking almost as much in five days as 2016's ‘Moana’ took in its entire US theatrical run ($248.7 million). What's more the film has also enjoyed the highest five-day opening, Thanksgiving weekend, and Thanksgiving debut of all time domestically, and is making waves to become the third biggest opening ever for an animation and for a musical globally.

At the same time, ‘Wicked’ has shown no signs of slowing down at the box office, bringing in $117.5 million over the five day weekend, pushing its two-week global total to $359.2m. Wicked is now the highest grossing Broadway adaptation over Grease. (The latter film grossed $190m on its release in 1978, but factoring in inflation would put it past $900m.) Gladiator II also steadied well but dipped 44% from its opening weekend. Ridley Scott’s sequel to his Oscar-winning original collected $44million in its second weekend. While its steep price budget of $250m will make profitability challenging, Gladiator II has made $320m worldwide.
