‘Creed 3’: Biggest Opening Ever For A Sports Movie

‘Creed 3’, directed by Michael B. Jordan in his feature filmmaking debut, set a franchise record for an opening weekend while also having the biggest-ever debut for a sports movie in the US. The Creed series of films were born out of the incredibly successful Rocky franchise and this film is the first of all of them to not feature Sylvester Stallone as Rocky.

As reported by Variety,’Creed 3’ brought in $58.7 million domestically and knocked out the projections that had the film earning between $36 million and $40 million in its first weekend. This was enough to surpass Creed's $29.6 million opening and Creed 2's $35.5 million debut.

Internationally, ‘Creed 3’ gained a further $41.8 million and is well on its way to recouping its $75 million production budget and additional marketing costs. This third film in the franchise is also the most expensive, as the first film cost $35 million and the second ran the bill up to $50 million.
